As it is written by a graphic designer, his and my ideas of what design is are somewhat different; his interpretation of a designer is as a communicator of ideas, which in day to day situations are probably not your own. Consequently, a lot of what he focuses on is advertising. The thought which this book has left drifting around in my mind is about images which lie. There are strict rules governing what advertising can and cannot claim about a product, if it is claimed explicitly. Most advertising, however, appeals to the subconscious and of course doesn’t need to claim anything explicitly in order to make you believe that your life can be made better with that product. Why is it legal to lie with images but not with words?
Ruth Archibald-Swaanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00883823487854930877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-220380944661623480.post-44434314838940955712011-04-03T21:03:00.014+01:002011-04-18T09:31:12.069+01:00Lucienne Day

Listening to Women's Hour on Radio 4 a wee while ago (yes, I know that must age me significantly, but it's so informative! I really like Lucienne Day's prints, even so many decades later they look fresh and smart. But this led me to look them up at see what they do, and it seems like an awesome place.

I was particularly interested in this thread which talks about design which deals with time, something i've been thinking about a lot recently. I like the work of Kristine Bjaadal (above), which starts off fully tufted and gradually wears away to reveal the pattern. I wrote my dissertation on planned obsolescence; how products are generally designed to begin to lose their appeal soon after we buy them, so that we will soon buy new things. I am interested in ways that designers can respond to this trend; partly by designing things which are meant to be safely and sustainably thrown away (in the vein of cradle to cradle) and partly through design which encourages people to build up a longer, more personal relationship with their things, as Kristine Bjaadal has done here so beautifully.Ruth Archibald-Swaanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00883823487854930877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-220380944661623480.post-45719116699601903112011-02-18T11:12:00.005+00:002011-02-18T11:24:49.951+00:00Well this has been a long time coming, after a pretty busy Christmas and New Year I went straight to the Netherlands, where I am doing an internship with Sylvie Meuffels, a young designer based in Eindhoven; her website is under construction right now but she also works with Knol (http://www.knol-ontwerp.nl/index.php). So far it's been very interesting and I've learnt a lot; mostly I'm making prototypes which is new to me and it's really helpful to see lots of different ways of presenting ideas and concepts. And began by looking through my old sketchbooks for some inspiration. I used to be a sketchbook fiend, but have been slacking rather a lot lately and it was helpful to go back and see things with a fresh eye. Seeing some recurring themes and little sparks of ideas that I never saw through to fruition has led to me writing myself a little brief to be working on.

In past work there is a recurring theme of physical memory; the stories that objects and surfaces can tell about their past. I am particularly interested in objects that change slowly over time, and the unintentional marks that people leave behind them. I see these as maps of actions and interactions, that tell us about the minute, seemingly unimportant (but vital in practicality) details of our lives.

Working in a cafe frequented by older people I have become interested in how memory loss affects people, especially as it is a very gradual process. It appears that this is an area overlooked by design, but that design could help these people to hold on to their independence for much longer if the issue was handled sensitively and poetically.

I am interested in how these two interpretations of the idea of the role of memory can be combined and would appreciate any thoughts or ideas.Ruth Archibald-Swaanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00883823487854930877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-220380944661623480.post-69296220431776945282010-09-23T16:09:00.015+01:002010-10-03T13:02:35.097+01:00Time for some history - this is my husband's grandparent's wedding silver, they were married in 1940.
The act of eating is one which is simultaneously the most simple and functional, yet filled with ritual and meaning. Attempts to rationalise mealtimes through fast food and ready meals have been met with the Slow Food movement and similar emphasis in the media.

Inspired by artists and designers such as Lucy Orta, Marije Vogelzang, Linda Worbin and Elise Rijnberg, I am particularly interested in the idea of food as a vehicle for social interaction and communication, aiming to create pieces and inspire rituals that are inviting and encourage interaction, both with the piece itself and with other people. Inspired by the ideas of the Slow Food movement, a principle aim is to encourage an awareness of time as a valuable asset to be spent wisely, rather than a commodity to be bought cheaply through fast food and TV dinners.

This is highlighted by the creation of tableware that is completely edible and therefore truly temporary. Each piece playfully contains instructions for a game that encourages the sharing of space and prohibits rush, requiring each ‘player’ to wait for the whole group to finish each course before continuing. I also utilise various methods of documentation of past meals, to continue this awareness of time and to give vitality to the work.
